Did you know the idea for @smokeybear came about on August 9, 1944 and the bear quickly became a symbol for forest fire prevention. Not long after in the spring of 1950, a young American black bear cub was rescued from a forest fire in New Mexico. The firefighters named him Smokey because of his bravery. But what does this have to do with backpacking you ask? Well, Smokey and #ospreyambassador @drawingfromnature share the same birthday and to celebrate their milestones, Smokey turning 75 and Andrea turning 30, we teamed up to giveaway a custom painted Smokey Bear pack!

Wild fire is a natural part of many eco systems. Species such as lodge pole pine and grizzly bears need fire to produce viable habitats and even for reproduction! Smokey the Bear’s message was a part of decades of fire suppression. I wonder if Osprey can work in partnership with national parks to rebrand the message and spread the word about the need for fire and proper fire management?

I love going into the Columbia gorge! Granted the fires from the two summers past have made it less than ideal, the greenery is back FULL FORCE. And wow wow wow are the sunsets just stunning. Angels rest as a sunrise hike and a butt burner is worth the nice hot cup of thermo joe I get at the top! 🌲🌲🌲

I live in San Jose, California and have so many great spots from which to choose!! One of the ones that comes to mind is Mt.Madonna in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Morgan Hill, California. My son and dog and I love to go there to escape the summer heat here in the valley.

Had visited Isle Royale NP while in the USCG. made up my mind that I wanted to go back. Luckily I was able to bring my son & a friend for a week long backpacking trip on the Isle.... Extremely enjoyable with great experiences. Beautiful remote park!!

The Appalachian Trail near Roan Mountain, Tennessee. A sunrise or sunset hike is the best time to go sit on the top of the balds and be able to look out for miles. It’s my “happy place” 👌🏼

Before it was the Oberhornsee Loop trail via Tanzbodeli in Gimmelwald, Switzerland it was Old Stage Coach Road in Colorado Springs with all of its aspens, cabins, creeks and beaver dams
