Uchi-mizu refers to the Japanese custom of spreading water to wet and cool the sidewalk. It is a method of lowering the temperature a garden or a road by sprinkling water with a ladle. This practice which dates back to the 16th century is still done nowadays in Japan. It was originally done before the start of a Japanese tea ceremony which also has the spiritual meaning of purifying the road leading to the ceremony using water to welcome the guests.
