At least 11 black trans women have been killed in the United States in 2019 alone. Layleen Cubilette-Polanco Xtravaganza's death occurred during New York City’s biggest #Pride month celebration ever, and against a backdrop of violence and neglect at Rikers Island. Her passing has not only touched her family and the ballroom community of which she was a part, but has contributed to national outrage over the mistreatment and abuse of trans women of color. A month later, in New York, Layleen’s older sister, Melania Brown, those who loved Layleen, and some who did not know her at all are trying to ensure her life—and death—are remembered; tap the link in our bio to read how they are mourning and organizing.

@krissabo2003 Even if it was 1 death, it’s a death. That person’s family will never see them again. That person is no more. We have to value life more. There is nothing greater than being alive. No sin is greater than another. If you lie, it’s the same as if you killed someone and anyone can turn their life around. Anyone. Stop judging and be more compassionate.

I understand that people with colour have to get through a lot more racism than the white ones, but isn't it time we stop separating women and men? Like who cares whether they were black or not? 11 freaking people died because of some monsters that couldn't appreciate and accept their diversity. May they rest in peace

Thank you for posting this. Layleen’s family called her a “bright light” and a friend called her a “beacon of joy.” It’s a terrible tragedy that she died alone in the torture of solitary confinement. We must shut down Rikers, end solitary, and shift this culture of hatred and violence toward trans people.

Yall gotta stop, they are always nice people and these people just take them out because they disagree, it's not right, if your one of those people, I want you to know you will be stopped and what goes around comes back around like a boomerang

The amount of self promos on this post are disgusting, but I'm so happy that it's full of people's condolences instead of hate. Why people take out their emotion on those they view as different I will never understand
