Kim Kardashian West caused an uproar last week after announcing the trademarking of Kimono for the debut of her shapewear series. Social media erupted with claims of insensitive cultural appropriation. Not long after the news began to escalate to an official level, Kardashian posted a statement on Instagram saying, “after careful thought and consideration, I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name.” Do you think she made the right decision?

Been posting and commenting on this issue from day 1 in social medias ❤️ It's a world between a meter of beige Spandex, and an exclusive, handsewn, hand painted artisans work of a Kimono, worn by generations ... We can all see that there is clearly no link. I am a Norwegian designer and textile developer, and I work mainly with re-design and upcycling from vintage kimonos. The love and respect I have for these carefully made, historical materials makes my work meaningful, humble and grateful. My first memory of a Kimono was 2 beautiful, antique pieces my grandma brought back from Japan as a young woman. When I was a little girl in the 70's, I was mezmerised by them, I would touch the fabrics, look at the intricate embroideries, admirer the emerald and powder pink colours. Now, I'm turning 52, and I'm still an admirer. Arigato gozaimasu ❤️

A name of traditional clothing of any country is not subject to become the trademark name of a scavenger businessman. Cultural heritage is a common good that we must preserve, protect and spread. Kimono is a word that defines traditional clothing very alive and that transpresses border of folklore to be fashionable by itself, does not admit reinterpretations and much less appropriation for the benefit of an American business. #kimonoisnotyourunderwear

This shit was planned from the start, no way this name went past her and her people without nobody realizing the insensitivity of it. she knew there was gonna be backlash and it would be trending, then she'd just "sincerely apologize for her mistake", everybody moves and Kim Kardashian wins with Free marketing on their side ??♀️

Eyerolled so hard it gave me a headache. What will those wretched people come up with next?? ? I can't believe she could just get away with that... Even if she didn't realize her error before, she clearly has now, and an apology would have been a sensitive move on her part. A little humility won't kill a Kardashian...

I think the ship has sailed on cultural appropriation when it comes to clothing. What was really wrong was to trademark it so no one else could use the word that has been used since at least the 700s (CE) making the use by others an infringement. And how stupid is she to equate kimono with so-called shapewear?

It's expected for her to be ignorant; but BELIEVE that the money-making fam already agreed about how such ignorance could help with the marketing/following of the product. Nowadays, where money or social media following is concerned, being sensitive & respectful to cultural history - plays such a minute part.
