Sen. Bernie Sanders announced a plan to cancel student debt — all $1.6 trillion of it — for 45 million Americans. 

The Democratic presidential candidate's plan would make public colleges and universities tuition- and debt-free. Trade schools and apprenticeship programs would be tuition-free, too.

At $2.2 trillion, critics say the plan is too expensive. It would be paid for by a new tax on financial transactions, including a 0.5 percent tax on stock transactions and a 0.1 percent tax on bonds.

“This is truly a revolutionary proposal,” Sanders told The Washington Post.
