At the Workhouse Jail in St. Louis, MO, 90% of those being held have not been convicted of a crime. And yet, they're held in "unspeakably hellish" conditions, away from their families and communities. Learn more and take action to #CloseTheWorkhouse at the link in our bio!

@christrocino you would be shocked, I promise you, how often people are arrested because they look like someone when they aren’t, or simply existed in a place where a crime was committed and were wrongly accused or doing the crime. And yes, people do get framed. Is it the majority? No. I can say with almost certainty that it is not. Benjamin Franklin referred to Voltaire in saying “That it is better 100 guilty Persons should escape than that one innocent Person should suffer...”, and I wholeheartedly agree with that. Here are just a few examples to show that this does happen:

And there are hundreds more. This is why we have a justice system that is supposed to presume innocent until proven guilty. The unfortunate reality is, however, that we often decide someone is guilty as soon as they are accused. That is why some court cases get thrown out over excessive media coverage. What if the person DIDN’T do it and now they are surrounded by people who see them as guilty, even though they have yet to be tried? How could you find an impartial jury? @benandjerrys is simply saying that we treat those in prison like dirt, and they are still human beings. Some of them may have done bad things, but they are human beings. Some of them are also, almost certainly, innocent!

@nydogwalker better jail conditions. It’s actually very simple. Hold people in a humane environment. One of the main problems is that many prisons are privatized and they get more money for each person in the prison and they do everything to cut spending like refusing to fix structural issues, refuse to build/maintain air conditioning and heat, etc. There was actually someone who used money that was meant to buy food for inmates to buy himself a house as well.

Dairy cows are also held in "unspeakably hellish" conditions, away from their families and communities. They endure a lifetime of suffering consisting of artificial impregnation, stolen calves and stolen milk and untimely atrocious death, simply for some ice cream... try the vegan option instead #vegan #govegan #ditchdairy #dairyisscary

@chrisnandstuff you may be falsely accused but there’s probable cause that you’re being falsely accused. Whether its having prior arrests or the wrong acquaintances... there’s a reason they ended up there to begin with. Life isn’t a Harrison Ford movie where connected dots don’t eventually draw a picture.

@chrisnandstuff thanks for responding, now I understand it better. The bad thing seems to be that some people are more likely to end up locked up,not because they did bad, but because the system is made against them. Those prisons for profit don't help either ?.

@christrocino remember, they may not have actually done anything. This is before they are tried. Hundreds of people are falsely accused and are put in prisons if they cannot make bail or if they are considered a flight risk.
