#GagosianArtistEye | #RobertTherrien: “Just by intuition I know that a representation of a real human is futile. Why even attempt it? This is just my way of doing it.”
—Robert Therrien
Inspired by representations of hair in classical sculpture and by the real beard of Constantin Brâncuşi, Robert Therrien explored the beard as a motif in both photography and in sculpture for an eight-year period (1999–2007). “No title (plaster beard)” (1999), is intentionally theatrical—made of carved plaster and complete with ear-loops—yet, it still implies a human face without ever depicting one.
