This beautiful earthenware jar is an albarello – used by apothecaries to hold drugs and ointments. Made in Granada, Spain, in the late 14th century, it is decorated with tree-of-life motifs and a band of blue Arabic script among tiny scrolls.

Objects with iridescent metallic glazes like this are known as lustreware – a technique perfected by Iraqi potters in the 9th century, which later spread across the Middle East and Europe.

You can see this lustrous object on display in our new Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic world (Rooms 42–43). #BritishMuseum #London #UK #IslamicArt #Spain #ceramics #lustreware
