This photo allows us to see Harriet Tubman in a new way—in her mid-40s, much younger than the iconic portraits of her, sitting not long after the end of the Civil War.
Tubman escaped slavery and returned to the South many times as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad to lead others to freedom. During the Civil War, she also served as a spy, cook, scout and nurse in the Union Army.
Two years ago, our @nmaahc jointly acquired the previously unknown photo with @librarycongress, as part of the Emily Howland photography album. The album was compiled as a gift for Howland, a Quaker school teacher, and includes 49 photos of educators, abolitionists and other individuals taken around the 1860s.
Now it's on display for the first time at @nmaahc, in the “Slavery and Freedom” exhibition. #BecauseOfHerStory
