In #ZaneleMuholi’s Faces and Phases project, the artist documents the breadth of identities of Black lesbian and transgender communities in South Africa and its diaspora. Ongoing since 2006, Muholi’s series acknowledges that LBGTQ visibility exists in the face of discrimination and violence, yet is also a defiant assertion of self-possessed presence and resistance, a refusal to be silenced or shamed because of one’s identity.
