#WorkoftheWeek is The Colour That Was There, painted by Gillian Ayres OBE in 1993.

Ayres created this painting by applying acrylic paint over a screenprint — the original shapes of which can be seen under and between the brushstrokes. This creates a sense of depth and space, despite the abstract nature of the composition. The work’s poetic title could be a reference to a colour in the screenprint that was later obscured by Ayres’s layer of paint.
