“Today’s FDA decision allowing genetically engineered salmon to end up on dinner plates throughout the U.S. demonstrates a continued arrogance that humans can dominate nature. For over 40 years, Patagonia has fought for wild places and the natural biodiversity they support. Scientists and watchdog groups indicate that genetically modified salmon pose serious risks to health, wild fish populations, local fishing economies and the environment — and labeling laws won’t go into effect until 2022, leaving citizens in the dark. Instead of opening the market to high-cost, risky technology like GMO salmon — particularly in this time of weakened government oversight — we need to reinvest in protecting our wild rivers and wild fish.”
Rose Marcario, CEO, Patagonia

In areas with poor soul quality or few natural resources, GMOs can be a great thing by providing higher yields to those who need it most. When used judiciously, GMOs can be a great benefit in these areas. GMOs are not needed in wealthy countries like the US. It fuels a system of over-consumption, by providing cheap food at the cost of the environment (yes, GMO crops are not good for the environment, no I’m not going to provide a source because Google), and by encouraging food waste. We feel entitled to cheap food and thus can throw it away without a second thought.

Everyone has a right to choose what they want to eat (esp. in America)... it’s just terrifying how many people on this thread are down with GMO’s ... yikes! 😳Better them than me. Thanks, Patagonia for always taking a stand, albeit sometimes the ‘unpopular’ one. 🙌🌎💚#soberingreality

How many people working for Patagonia have gone hungry in their childhood? Although some concerns are valid we either need more food or less people, which ethical concerns will you back when it comes time to choose which of your great grandchildren will eat?

So tired of people who aren’t scientists who make these decisions as if we don’t have enough cancer and disease in the world, let’s open the door and see what this brings. I truly hate these types of people and what the FDA stands for.
