At the age of twenty five Atkinson Grimshaw gave up work as a railway clerk and began painting full-time. In his attempt to record the natural world with absolute visual accuracy, his paintings are characterised by displaying brilliant colours and holding an almost frozen quality.

The artist's 1863 painting 'Bowder Stone, Borrowdale' is inspired by the precarious position of a 2000 ton rock in England's Lake District. The work was almost certainly based on a photographic source which may explain why it has been described as an 'airless moment of time'.
