Lettuce Romaine Calm! This work by Giovanni Anselmo titled “Senza titolo (Untitled)” (1968), also known as “Struttura che mangia (“Eating Sculpture),” consists of a small block of granite tied with copper wire to a granite pillar. Every few days, our dedicated staff of curators, collection assistants, art handlers and conservators “feed” this sculpture fresh lettuce, filling the space between the block and pillar with greens. As the lettuce wilts, the small block begins to move, thus the work needs to be “fed” to remain whole. This commentary on energy, nature, and gravity, can be seen in “#ArtePovera: Homage to Amalfi ’68."
