The current obsession with taking everyday functional items from the office or home (think big paper clips, cable ties or bulldog clips ) and reapplying them to apparel, bags, eyeware or jewellery is surely inspired by the humble safety pin. Grossly misrepresented as the symbol of punk , the safety pin was not necessarily the ironic application of an everyday item but a simple solution to the DIY culture of punk where fabric and bindings could be hastily held together by safety pins pillaged from wherever they could be found.
So here it is, an authentic oversize pin that takes something functional and reappropriates the meaning .
