Ever wonder how prints are made? Our newest online feature uses animated images and illustrative works from the @MetDrawingsAndPrints collection to show you the materials and techniques used to create #prints—from the earliest employed techniques of #woodcut, engraving, and etching, to more recent methods like lithography and screenprinting.

First up—woodcuts! The oldest form of #printmaking, woodcut is a relief process in which knives and other tools are used to carve a design into the surface of a wooden block. The raised areas that remain after the block has been cut are inked and printed, while the recessed areas that are cut away do not retain ink, and will remain blank in the final print. ➡️ Swipe to watch #MetDrawingsAndPrints’ Collections Specialist Liz Zanis create her own print…and then visit met.org/2RvDiCL to see more!

This project was made possible by the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies (@lncps) at Columbia University.
