Fish, slugs, dragons, human faces…these are some of the forms emerging from the lava-like surface of this silver ewer. Recently acquired by The Met, this extraordinary ewer (or large jug) exemplifies the bizarre Auricular style fashionable in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. The organic and fluid forms are reminiscent of the inner ear, hence its name. The work, created by silversmith Adam van Vianen, is now on view in the exhibition “Relative Values: The Cost of Art in the Northern Renaissance.” #AdamvanVianen #RelativeValues
