Here’s a #behindthescenes look at Project Conservator Liz Peirce working with museum upholsterer Beth Paolini and Montgomery-Garvan Curator of American Decorative Arts Alexandra Kirtley on this “Bishop’s Chair.” Their mission: to restore the chair to how it would have looked in 1812 when it was made by Richard Alexander for St. James Church in Philadelphia. By analyzing fibers found in the original nail holes, Liz was able to confirm Alexandra’s historical research that the original upholstery was cotton velvet trimmed with decorative brass tacks. Beth mounted the new red velvet upholstery to a non-invasive support system to preserve the original chair while showcasing how it would have looked in 1812.
