Aristocrate lettrée et auteur de pièces de théâtre, ?Maria Rita Barrenechea épousa en 1775 le comte del Carpio, marquis de La Solana.
Le couple, ami de la célèbre duchesse d'Albe, habitait à Madrid près du domicile de Goya et formait le type même des Espagnols "éclairés", s'intéressant aux réformes. ?
L'oeuvre fut peinte peu avant la mort du modèle. ?
Elle porte la traditionnelle robe noire à basquine découvrant ses pieds chaussés d'escarpins brodés. L'étonnante fleur dans ses cheveux, formée de grosses coques de ruban rose pâle, semble une concession à la mode du temps. ?

The couple, who was friendly with the famous Duchess of Alba, lived near Goya's home in Madrid, and was typical of the "enlightened" Spanish who took an interest in reforms. ?
This work was painted shortly before the model's death. ?
She wears a traditional black dress with a Basquine (bodice), and embroidered slippers. The unusual flower in her hair — consisting of large folds of pale pink ribbon — would appear to be a concession to contemporary fashion. ?
