Oshima Island is an active volcano. After an eruption, the natural vegetation regrows in the order of lichen, endemic Hachijo knotweed, and semi-endemic Hachijo silver grass. This deserted landscape was created by lava flow of the 1777 eruption. Now, Hachijo silver grass flowers all over the area in autumn.
