If you've smelled a Durian even once, you probably remember it. Some people describe the smell as an open sewer. Yet, this rancid fruit is attracting investments like never before.

Durian supposedly tastes “quite delicious” despite the potent stench. “When you taste it, it has a kind of fresh and sweet flavor, as if you arrived in the tropics,” said a customer who ordered a Durian pizza in Shanghai.

Malaysia is rushing to develop thousands of acres so it can cash in on the unprecedented demand for the fruit in China. China is willing to pay top dollar for Malaysia’s variety of durian because of its creamy texture and bitter-sweet taste. The Southeast Asian nation is expecting sales to jump by 50% in 2030.
