Linda Nochlin’s 1971 essay “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?”, which shines a light on the societal structures that have prevented women from becoming artists and/or from being recognized for their work, is often regarded as a turning point in the field of art history and feminist scholarship. This portrait by Philip Pearlstein, painted on the occasion of Nochlin’s marriage to Richard Pommer, hung in their home. Following Nochlin’s death last year, her family gifted this painting to the Brooklyn Museum, an institution with which she had a lifelong relationship. #halfthepicturebkm
