This #NationalFossilDay, think beyond the ?. Here's a sea ? from Kansas.
In the Cretaceous period, this giant turtle (Protostega gigas) swam in North America’s inland sea, which connected the Gulf of Mexico with the Arctic Ocean.
It lived 83 to 81 million years ago and weighed more than 2,000 pounds. With a streamlined body and strong front flippers, it was a powerful swimmer.
See it at @smithsoniannmnh when #DeepTime opens June 8.
