Around 1990, all Anime Otaku were labeled as creepers in Japan. Anno san intentionally shook the scene up, and smashed it in creating Evangelion. Watching Anime became major in Japan and worldwide. IMHO his success was the crit to end the negativity. We danced around this topic in Kyoto, and I got that he wasn’t stoked, but actually disappointed by the world after Evangelion. It’s always a struggle for innovators to communicate to the world what they have in their brains. They have to frustratedly slog away to shape the world they want. Even successful artwork is not always successful in its communication. This is the creator’s fate. He has been thugging out the new Evangelion movie for 8 years.
