Today is the 40th anniversary of the very first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which was held on 24 June in 1978. The event has grown from a small political march commemorating the Stonewall Riots in New York to the world’s biggest gay and lesbian festival, attracting crowds of over half a million local, interstate and international spectators. The 1978 march has become a defining moment for civil rights in Australia.
