When you picture a cowboy, what do you see?
While the image of the cowboy is most commonly associated with the American west, cattle ranching was a key part of Hawai’i’s economy and society. Men who worked cattle ranches were often known as “paniolo.” These objects belong to Masatsu “Masa” Kawamoto, a paniolo, born on the Big Island in 1923. A life-long rancher, Kawamoto worked at Hawai’i’s Parker Ranch—the second largest cattle ranch in the United States—before owning his own ranch.
