I don’t call on Mother’s day. I like to give it a couple days to build the tension and then surprise her at some horrible inconvenient hour. We’ve been doing this since I first lived on the farm in Japan and didn’t have a phone in the mountains. It just became our thing. This year I decided to switch things up and call a few days ahead of Mother's Day. It was 5 am on Thursday morning. I figured she’d be up. Early mornings are in our genes. There was no answer. 30 minutes passed, no answer. One hour, nothing. I’d seen her recently. A couple weeks back I made a road trip to the glorious wilds of eastern Utah for a funeral. My stepfather was 95 when he passed. They were quite a duo. They never stopped. They hiked miles every day, went fishing all the time, and even hunted deer together. Did I mention they first met when she was 73 and he was 85? She’s not much for being a worry to anyone, but naturally we all worry, and the check-in phone calls have been more common in the last weeks, so she’s on to us. Thirteen children and a whole lot of resulting grandchildren can really tie up the phone lines. Apparently, she needed a break from the spotlight for a bit that morning and went for a hike. At 9:30 am I finally got a callback. She’d been up on the mountain tracking black bears. Yep. You read that right. Apparently, it’s her thing now. She tracks bears for fun and reports what she finds to the local rangers as they try to get a count for cubs every spring. I’m surprised, of course, but I’m also not surprised at all. There are countless stories like this. This is pretty much the mother I’ve always known. I’m glad she’s back to her old self. Maybe it’s her generation, but there’s is a kind of grit and strength in all of those stories that I admire, respect, and ceaselessly try to emulate. I’ll never know what its like to have 13 children. I could never imagine nor muster the strength it must have taken to feed all of us and never look worried. But I know I have some of her in me, maybe even a lot, and that’s a great thing to fall back on when building a company like ours. - Daniel Lantz #mothersday #motherhood #mom #motherlove ? @vasiligavre
