1976 was quite a turning point for British music. Whilst the country suffered an awful heatwave and subsequent drought, the charts were dominated by ABBA and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was No.1 for five weeks. Though underground, a movement was surging. It disappeared as suddenly as it appeared, but 1976 saw the fearless growth spurt of a tremendous Subculture talked about until this very day. Inspired by American Garage and New Wave bands, and movements such as the French Situationists- youths angry and disillusioned with life in the UK had formed bands. Their music and uniform was constructed with the means to defy and subvert. It's presence gave meaning and power to alienated youths, but soon terrified the nation. Before long, it peaked and fizzled out only in a matter of months.⠀ ⠀ Jonh Ingham was one of the first reporters to see Punks in a positively curious light- having been the first person to interview the Sex Pistols or review gigs from The Damned and The Clash for Sound magazine. He also noticed that no one was visually capturing the early days of the scene- so to remedy this, he grabbed his camera and followed the above bands across Europe. 'Spirit of 76' is the consequence of his curiosity and consciousness. It offers photos flushed with colour showcasing the spitting and spiked but rosy optimism of Punk's early days. The days before Grundy. Big bands play to empty stages, lesser known play to packed venues. It's an honest and eye opening account of the movement that continues to inspire people. A good reminder at the people behind the scandal, the music behind the headlines. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Find Jonh Inghams London Punk Eyewitness account online and instore.⠀ ⠀ #UndergroundEngland #UndergroundShoes #UndergroundBooks #UndergroundReads #SubcultureBooks #MusicBooks
