I’ve been trying to put my thoughts into words , but could not have said it better than @1granary ❤️?? "In schools around the world, young people are sacrificing their health for better marks, ignoring mental and physical pain, taking drugs to make it through the night and stimulate their performance. Our industry has normalized, even glamourized, this behaviour. Read between the lines of any graduate interview, it’s always there. When did we decide that this is the ideal environment for creation? The problem is not competition or pressure per se. The problem is that we present only one road to success: go to the number one school (who made up that ranking?), get picked up by press, win an award and start a label. Anyone who doesn’t fit the mould is cast out, a loser. Is there only one way to be happy in fashion? When your self-worth is dependent on exterior attributors of success (a grade, a competition, a mention in a list), when you’re taught that you’re only as good as the work you produce, that happiness might never be found. Take it one step further: when you’re equating the quality of a school to the success of its students, you’re encouraging this toxic environment of performance culture and status anxiety. If students become clients, there is just as much pressure on tutors. Institutions that should operate as safe spaces and breading places for ideas are forced to become businesses. We do not know why a boy decided to take his own life last month, and if it is connected to anything we’re discussing here. But rather than blindly pointing at an accused, we should all question the culture of this industry and how we, as individuals, contribute to it. Students, stay in tune with your feelings and know your limits. If not today, you try again tomorrow, or in a few years. Putting someone else down doesn’t make your work better. Tutors, there is a difference between tough love and no love at all. Journalists, that graduate is not the next “breakout star everyone should know,” it’s a young person with a good idea. To anyone reading this, let’s look out for each other." ??❤️
