The Skull and Crossbones Tartan Patch Hoody has just hit the Soho and online store.. Not surprisingly, we like a bit of the Skull and Crossbones at Underground. The motif has been around for at least 800 years and was used by armies, pirates and on graveyard entrances before it was also adopted as a warning sign on dangerous substances. The 'keep out' or 'danger' message given out by the symbol made it an obvious choice of symbol for Bikers and Punks.
The kids have always loved it given the association with the romanticised image of pirates and you have to give them that concession. But the unfortunate re-appropriation of the symbol by mainstream and its application to everything and anything sold for cheap was a sad occurrence in the early 2000's. What those products did lack was authenticity and attitude. So here is our small step in taking that back. In the spirit of pirates we ain't asking for it back, we are taking it.
