‘Germaine Richier’s best-known work explores the themes and dichotomies of the post-war generation – figuration versus abstraction, textures versus colours, truth versus imagination. Richier’s Chessboard is made up of the five core pieces in a game of chess: a king, queen, bishop, knight and rook. They’re each part human, part animal, part something else – Richier used these distorted animal and partly human figures to reflect the anxieties of post-war Europe. Chess became a recurring subject for art over the last 100 years and while it is normally associated with analytical rationality, Richier subverts this in her version of the chessboard in which magic and mystery rule.’ - Frances Morris, Director Tate Modern
