Cuban artist Tania Bruguera first presented “Untitled (Havana, 2000)” at the 2000 Havana Biennial. Curator Stuart Comer notes, “every element—from venturing into a tunnel immersed in near-total darkness and the pungent odor of sugarcane to an ominous performance in the shadows—evokes the contradictions of life in the wake of the Cuban Revolution, yet suggests themes that remain deeply relevant today.” For Bruguera, this is the piece in which her performance work started to move towards a more participatory form, saying "I don’t want to represent a political situation but to provoke a political situation.”
