“Our plan was to visit Refugio Atacama, which according to our plan was the starting point for our climb. Refugio Atacama sits at the base of Ojos del Salado at 17,000 feet. We heard rumors that the road is rough so it was best to check it out for ourselves since we were planning on driving up to the Refugio at night the following day. We drove by patches after patches of ‘penitentes’ or snow formations found at high altitudes. They take the form of elongated, thin blades of hardened snow and point toward the direction of the sun.
