[A special event to celebrate the New Year will be held in front of the theatre!] On January 2nd, a special event to celebrate the New Year, as well as the beginning of the New Year Asakusa Kabuki performances, will be held in front of the Asakusa Public Hall. Actors taking part in the New Year Asakusa Kabuki will pound open a big saké barrel. This ceremony is called ‘kagami-biraki’ and is held to wish for good fortune. ‘Kagami’ refers to the round head of a saké barrel and ‘biraki’ means ‘opening’. This action is considered very auspicious. The event takes place every year for the New Year Asakusa Kabuki and is always held on the opening day of the performances. Since Asakusa is a very popular spot to visit during the New Year season, in spite of the early starting time many audience members and tourists visiting Asakusa stop by for this event. After the ‘kagami-biraki’, actors will make their New Year greetings and speak about their enthusiasm for the performances. (Kabuki Facebookより)
