Grappling with the turbulence of the 1960s, #PhilipGuston asked himself, “what kind of a man am I, sitting at home, reading magazines, going into a frustrated fury about everything—and then going into my studio to adjust a red to a blue?” In 1968, after nearly two decades painting abstractly, Guston introduced figures into his work. His new paintings were scathing and satirical, often addressing current events.
