Coal in your stocking isn't so bad if it's decorated with a dutiful donkey. Jet coal was used for most coal carvings due to its hard nature and ability to be polished to a high shine, although sometimes anthracite coal was substituted.
Coal was often carved to create jewelry, small statues, or images engraved on a polished surface, like the donkey seen here. This coal carving was donated to the museum by James R. Deegan of Hazelton, Pennsylvania, in 1971. We hope you get some fun stuff in your stockings this year, Instagram friends!
