I remember going to Mostar in October 2000 to perform at the Pavarotti Center with Brian Eno and Horace Andy etc, as part of the UNHCR program. The scenes I witnessed that was fresh from a war zone, left an indelible impression on me and motivated me to be more active in my work.

War changes people. I spoke to many young soldiers who came out of the war, one kid was a drummer who drove me around town and pointed at all the corners where he exchanged gunfires. As captivated as I was, the conversation was unsolicited, I was just there to listen. I will never forget what he told me in the car, he said: "When I was in the war, I watched my friends die, and I didn't shed a tear. I was like a robot. But now that the war is over, if I lost a friend tomorrow, I think I can cry. I am still human".
