?? #BonneSemaine à tous ! Nous commençons cette semaine en partageant une bonne nouvelle avec vous ?. Les collections du musée s’enrichissent avec la récente acquisition de ce tableau peint par Claude-Marie Dubufe en 1827 !

Le tableau pourrait être le portrait de Hassan el Berberi, écuyer du consul de France en Egypte, Bernardino Drovetti (1776-1852). Il fut chargé de protéger et d'accompagner la jeune girafe offerte en cadeau par le vice-roi d’Egypte Mehmet Ali au roi de France Charles X. Il s’agissait du premier spécimen vivant parvenant en France, et cela déclencha une véritable « girafomanie ». Vous pourrez venir l’admirer prochainement dans les salles de peintures françaises du XIXe siècle de l'aile Sully, nous vous tiendrons informés de son accrochage.

This portrait, painted by Claude-Marie Dubufe in 1827 has recently been added to the Museum’s collection. It is thought that the painting could be the portrait of Hassan el Berberi, the Consul of France in Egypt’s squire, Bernardino Drovetti (1776-1852). He was charged to protect and accompany the young giraffe that was offered as a gift by the Viceroy of Egypt Mehmet Ali to the King of France Charles X. It was the first living specimen to reach France and this led to an obsession with giraffes. You will be able to come and see it soon in the Sully Wing in the rooms dedicated to XIXth century French art.
