Can you outfox a fox and get it to self-vaccinate for rabies? Sort of. The Center for Disease Control tried modifying a device called the "Humane Coyote Getter." The Getter had originally been patented in 1934 as a commercial device "for killing fur-bearing animals." Instead of killing the mammal, the modified device would administer an oral rabies vaccine. Alas, the "getter" didn't work well. It sometimes injured an animal's mouth or failed to provide enough of the vaccine. ?? What to try next? The Vac-Trap. Researchers tweaked a typical pressure-plate triggered trap so that when an animal stepped on the trigger plate, a syringe full of vaccine swung around and jabbed the animal’s body. Vaccinated, the animal continued on its merry way. ???☠️ The Vac-Trap didn't pass muster, but did scientists yell, "Oh for fox sake!" and give up on this problem? Nope! They kept trying, hoping to find a solution for Fantastic Mr. Fox and Mrs. Fox as well. ????
