Romance. Intrigue. Fighting injustice. Colonial history. "Tanairí” had it all. Von Marie Méndez played the main character Soledad Arizmendi, who wore this costume as she fought for abolition and against injustice in the show. A telenovela produced during the golden age of the Puerto Rican soap opera industry in the 1970s and 1980s, "Tanairí" used romance to explore Puerto Rican colonial history.
Soledad returns from school in France to discover 1880s Puerto Rico in turmoil under Spanish colonial rule. She decides to take on her family and society—fighting for justice, freedom, and the end of slavery. In true telenovela style, drama ensues.
Telenovelas have a tight story arc. So unlike soap operas, they often last less than a year. In 2012, it was estimated that more than half of Latinos watch telenovelas. Due to their incredible popularity, some telenovelas contain educational messages for the public.
The dress and other objects that joined our collection from Telemundo TV will not be on immediate display. Stay tuned for updates. If you've watched telenovelas, tell us which are your favorites!
