We dissected the methods of customising in a previous post- about how we are endlessly interpreting the messages that our clothing says to one another. Adopting a #pinbadge on your jacket- whether it be denim, fur, leather, a suit or uniform- speaks volumes to the world around what kind of person you are. Heading back into the Middle Ages, early uses were heraldic- denoting your service to a particular army, or allegiance to a political stance or royal. During the Tudor period for example- badges were hugely popular during the War of the Roses- white roses for the House of York and red for Lancaster. This traditional of aligning yourself to your political party through the wearing of a badge prevails today. From these heraldic badges, grew ‘livery’ badges in the 19th Century, which more specifically suggests your rank within the armed forces. This then progressed into becoming an essential component of any uniform of any kind- whether its police, army, doctors- or school uniform even. The use of badges outside of the traditional routine of workforce or politics came about in the 70’s with #Punk. As with many other items- the Punks took the rigidity of the object and reclaimed it for their own chaotic purpose. In 1976 #JolyMcafie set up a stand at the #Roundhouse in London selling the pin badges he made. Inspired by ‘people power’ movements and having an interest in underground music, he wanted to combine the two in his business, Better Badge. His motto at the inception was wonderful: "Image as Virus, Elitism for All," suggesting that fans could wear and support whatever they liked, without either (a) being at the mercy of promotional largesse, or (b) being gouged by merchandisers. The idea was that fans, rather than industry gatekeepers, could dictate trends.’ #BetterBadge went on to create thousands of badges for the likes of the #SexPistols, #PattiSmith, #theClash and #JoyDivision. In honour of our campaign hailing #theNorth, we’ve picked out our favourite badges proclaiming our love for our northern heritage.
