On May 18, 1975, Robert Rauschenberg arrived at the estate of the Sarabhai family, north of the old city of Ahmedabad, India. Invited by Anand Sarabhai to make work drawing upon the resources of a local paper mill, Rauschenberg's residency inspired continuing projects involving collaboration with local art communities and provided the genesis of the development of the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI).
