Looking rather like a cyclops from Greek mythology, we spotted this Monotropastrum humile, or ‘ginryoso,’ at the foot of Mount Hachimantai. If you’re not expecting them, these guys can give you a shock when they appear along the mountain path!

These unique little flowers are also called ‘yurei-take’ (ghost mushrooms) and ‘mori no hanayome’ (brides of the forest). When the white flower withers, a round seed appears.
