There are 32 known species of seal, which can be divided into two types: earless (true seals) and eared. Eared seals include sea lions and fur seals, which have longer flippers and more prominent fur. Found in and around a range of cold waters across the globe, seals are semiaquatic carnivores that eat mostly fish, although exact diet varies from species to species. The smallest known species of seal, which measures about 3.6-4.6 ft long and weighs 110-290 lbs, inhabits Siberia. In contrast, the male elephant seal is the largest species on record, measuring up to 21 ft long and weighing up to 8,150 lbs. Various species can hold their breath for 20-30 minutes and reach depths of 500-800 ft, but elephant seals have specializations that allow them to dive deeper than a mile and remain underwater for up to 2 hours in search of food. Once a year, seals come ashore to breed. Blubber is essential to a seal’s survival, and babies need to gain weight quickly--fortunately, a mother seal’s milk can be about 50% fat.
Seals also provide a hopeful lesson in conservation efforts: in the 19th century, Northern elephant seals were hunted to dangerously low numbers, but international regulations and agreements intervened to protect them, allowing populations to recover.
