Over the past 30 years, the habitat of Asian elephants has declined by 70 percent. Combined with the fact that Asian elephants are typically forest dwellers, that makes the animals extremely difficult to study.
Scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute use satellite imagery and ground studies to track and study Asian elephants in their natural habitat.
With a satellite collar, scientists can remotely monitor an elephant, gaining insight into his or her movement habits, group dynamics and ideal habitat. #WorldElephantDay #WeSaveSpecies
