Cats on cash! Our National Numismatic Team member Hillery Y. and the museum's mountmaker and cat aficionado, Laura M. picked out a few of their favorite felines on international money for #InternationalCatDay. More on the blog: http://s.si.edu/CatsCash

A particularly beautiful coin from Oman is the 2 1/2 rial from 1977, which features on the reverse a caracal lynx, "Caracal caracal schmitzi," also referred to as the desert lynx or Arabian caracal.
This 1 crown coin from 1970 features a Manx "Felis catus" known locally as "stubbing cat." The Manx cat is the national symbol of the Isle of Man and as such was featured on the reverse of a series of commemorative coins issued by the Bank of England. This is the first issued coin in the series.

Our friends from @biodivlibrary and @silibraries have fabulous feline illustrations in their collections.
This illustration of a caracal appeared in the first book of “A Handbook to the Carnivora” by Richard Lydekker and edited by R. Bowdler Sharpe. The book was published in 1896 by E. Lloyd. Courtesy of Biodiversity Heritage Library/Smithsonian Libraries.

A photo of a Manx show cat named Silverwing that appeared in “Cats and All About Them” by Frances Simpson, published in 1902 by F.A. Stokes. Courtesy of Biodiversity Heritage Library/University of California Libraries. #CatDay #CatsOfInstagram #SciArt #Numismatics
