In 1893, Czech superstar composer Antonin Dvorak spent his summer in Spillville, IA and wrote his "American" String Quartet no.12, one of my favorite pieces of all time and one of the most popular in the genre. He was inspired by the expansive landscape and Native American music and African American spirituals, and encouraged American classical composers to tap into what he thought was distinctively an "American" sound.

Maybe it's just me, but in this piece I hear breaths of optimism that many immigrants must have felt back then when they finally made it to America, leaving often oppressive and destitute conditions in Europe, and so I wrote a song over the first movement as an musical study of sorts. @rolstonquartet really gave it a life of its own ?
