“Drawing Now: 1955–1975” brought together contemporary work by 46 major artists involved in radically and purposefully expanding the possibilities of drawing, transforming it into one of the most essential forms of the era. In her catalogue essay, curator Bernice Rose argued that, despite drawing’s conservative reputation, “during the past twenty years a number of artists have, and with increasing intensity since the middle sixties, seriously investigated the nature of drawing, investing major energies in a fundamental reevaluation of the medium, its discipline and uses.” Some of these reevaluations, which redefined and greatly broadened the definition of drawing, included Sol LeWitt’s pioneering wall-based compositions and Richard Serra’s monumental oilstick drawings. “Drawing Now” helped to foster the recognition of drawing as an important mode of art making unto itself, rather than a provisional practice defined by sketching and preparatory studies for paintings and sculptures.
