The famous helmet found at Sutton Hoo in July 1939 is one of only four complete Anglo-Saxon examples ever discovered. It is brilliantly decorated with cloisonné and gilding. Swipe to see the reconstruction, which shows the original designs in dazzling detail. One scene depicts warriors holding swords and spears, and wearing horned headgear. Another shows a mounted warrior trampling a fallen enemy, who in turn stabs the horse. The features of the helmet’s ‘face’ also form a bird or dragon flying upwards – the eyebrows act as this creature’s wings, and the moustache as the tail.
