Although the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex skull is used as the logo for the book and film franchise Jurassic Park, T. rex actually lived during the very end of the Late Cretaceous Period, which is from about 90 to 66 million years ago. And despite being one of the most recognizable dinosaurs, its skeletons are quite rare—fewer than two dozen fairly complete specimens have ever been collected. This fossil was discovered in 1902 in Montana by Barnum Brown, a curator from the Museum. Henry Fairfield Osborn, then the President of the Museum, was struck by its size, and gave the dinosaur its name in 1905: Tyrannosaurus rex, the "tyrant lizard king.” Based on fossil specimens, scientists have estimated that Tyrannosaurus could have been up to 40 feet long and 12 feet high, and weighed between 11,000 and 15,500 pounds. That's about as much as the largest African elephant! #trex #tyrannosaurusrex #cretaceous #amnh #dinosaur #dinosaurs #fossil #fossils #naturalhistory
